COURSE DESCRIPTION:
In this course students will learn the very foundation of Kizomba. Perfect for those with absolutely zero experience. We’ll go over the fundamental movements and an easy overview of the basics to partnered Kizomba dance.
Kizomba is an African dance characterized by close partner connection and smooth, grounded movement. Hailing from Angola, Kizomba, has no “basic step” after the fashion of ballroom dances, to be repeated continuously throughout the dance. Instead, movement with the music is the priority, and steps are incorporated according to the range of your vocabulary. Kizomba can be successfully danced with only four or five moves, and yet mastery lies in the subtlety of movement and of the lead-follow connection. Kizomba is a close dance but is only as close as you and your partner choose to make it. As with any social dance, courtesy and respect are basic expectations, so there’s no need to feel intimidated by the social floor! Kizomba is a wonderful, moving dance that will appeal to new dancers and veterans alike.
Frequently Asked Questions.
What do I wear? Just wear something loose and comfortable and wear shoes that are closed in and not too grippy.
What do I bring? Water and a towel is advised.
Do I need to bring a partner? Absolutely not. Most students come alone and dance with the students that attend class.
How many students are in a class? We cap our classes at 20 students. We also try to keep the leader/follower numbers as even as possible, ten of each position. Traditionally a Leader is a Male student and a Follower is a Female student. However we encourage students to step into the role they feel comfortable with.
What if I’m really uncoordinated? That’s what you come to dance classes for right?!! Our instructors are incredibly patient, kind and will attend to your learning and concerns with care. Our community is also very supportive and will be very welcoming.
