Monday 8.30pm Open Cuban Son Technique with Cara (Vintage Focus)
Son is first and foremost a distinct music style that originated from east Cuba during the 19th century. During the 20th Century, it gradually gained popularity and turned from music and dance for the peasants, to a big hit in Havana’s ballrooms. Above all, you can summarize it in one word – Elegance. It is the music style that preceded and gave birth to Salsa (or better said casino) nowadays. Since then the popularity of Salsa grew and grew, while unfortunately, the popularity of Son declined. A Cuban Salsa dancer will learn and massively improve his/her leading/following skills if he/she chooses to dabble in Son. It’s an amazing learning experience that teaches one to appreciate many things we often neglect in Salsa: closed position, precision, simplicity courtesy and more…And the beautiful thing is that anything you learn in Son translates into Salsa almost directly. So if you want to to take your dancing further – Don’t hesitate and learn Son. This term will have a more vintage focus and we’ll discover more about the tornillo and how to use it in various ways.

Wednesday 6.30pm – Beginner Dominican Bachata Technique with Amelia
Bachata is a dance from the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean islands. Both the music and the dance have been influenced by Cuban Bolero, the Merengue (also of Dominican Republic origin), Salsa and Cumbia. Bachata is one of the most popular styles of social dance in the Latin dance scene. This dance is based on an easy to follow sequence of three on-beat steps, with a tap marking the fourth beat. It is styled with a fluid movement of the body which is mesmerising to watch and just wonderful to dance! Bachata’s simplicity makes it a very beginner-friendly dance, while the opportunity for musical interpretation it provides makes it truly addictive for dancers of all levels.

Thursday 7.30pm – Zambra Mora (Barefoot Flamenco) with Cara
Cara is really excited to be teaching this style. Something she has studied personally for most of her dance career. It has coloured the way she dances and she’s often asked about the elements it brings to her dance style. So she is excited to share this with the Global Dance Collective students. Also known as Zambra Mora, the Zambra is a flamenco dance of the Romani people in Granada. It appears that the word Zambra has its meaning in the Arabic word zamra (flute) (flute) or zamara (musicians). The Romani Zambra was born in Sacromonte, in the caves of the Romani people. A style of song and dance inspired by the local Muslim weddings. When the Moors were persecuted by the Christians, they took refuge with the Romani, so that the latter ended up enriching themselves with their art. With the passage of time, the Zambra also became part of the weddings of the Romani of Sacromonte. At that time, the gypsy Zambra was danced barefoot, wearing a long skirt with large pleats tied at the hips that seemed to float when dancing and a blouse knotted under the chest. Students will be required to purchase a 25 yard skirt (which can be bought from Belly Dance stores) see Cara for more info on this. This course will focus on technique in term one. But will move into a Choreography in term two. Which will be performed at Global Shimmy mid year. This course is open to everyone, from any dance background.
